News Package Project

Project Team: Individual or partners

Project Components:

  • Pre-Production: Storyboard, shot sequence, script, cast, locations, props list, etc. 100 points
  • Production: Footage, including b-roll and interview. 100 points
  • Post-Production: Finished product. 200 points
  • Critique: Paper. 100 points

Project Synopsis: For this assignment you need to produce a 2:00 video news package centered on a relevant issue. The package must be well researched and present all sides of the story. Your news package must include:

  • Begin and end at news desk
  • At least one location stand-up
  • At least one “sit down” interview with a pertinent subject
  • Voice over commentary where appropriate
  • B-Roll footage

Project Detail: You are responsible for determining what issue your news package will feature. The material must be an original idea, no copying an existing news package. You should pick an issue that matters to WHS students or the Winthrop community as a whole. All shots should be well composed and planned. You will need to incorporate and use appropriate audio tools/microphones. When you are conducting research/interviews make sure to act in a professional and appropriate manner. This project must demonstrate your knowledge of camera work, audio/sound work, 3-point lighting, and editing.

You will complete a script using Celtx and a shot sequence (with video, audio, and time) along with your storyboard. Your project must be approved by me before you start production.

The news package must be exactly 2:00. This time does not include a title slide or end credits, which are expected as always. I am looking for creative shot selection, audio quality, continuity and tight editing.

Watch various news sources such as CNN, FOX, CBS, NBC, ABC and even The Onion to get the thought process going. Here are some ideas to consider: Day of Caring, Make a Difference Day, Awareness Period topic, community celebrity, local concert or benefit event, etc.

As always you will need to write a one-page minimum critique after the project reflecting on what you did, what went well, what was frustrating, what you learned as a result of the project, what you hope to improve upon for the next project, and any future goals you have for your film making. Basically, you need to evaluate your progress as a filmmaker. This must be typed, 12 point size, Times New Roman font, double spaced, and standard one-inch margins. This is due at the completion of the project.
