How to Effectively Use in Negative Space in Your Shots, by: Kyle Cassidy, November 2013 Videomaker Magazine issue

318-C10-Basic-Training-PRIMARY

This article is about negative space, negative space brings in viewers attention to certain areas because of the lightness and darkness.  The non negative space is an individual, a piece of machinery, or another thing.  Then the negative space is the area around that object.   Negative space sets the mood as well, like happy, or sad.  Basically, you can play around with negative space to create mystery, or make the viewers wonder what could happen next.  It’s a well used technique especially in horror movies because you can have an area where anything could come from a place at any moment in a vast environment. To have a lot of negative space, you may want to have a clear background, or just take away some objects so there’s not so much going on.  I learned what negative space is in this article.  I can apply this to class by trying to use negative space in a video.

10 Problems That Might Break Your Gear When Shooting an Event (and How to Avoid Them) By: Chuck, Peters , April 2014 videomaker issue

323-F4-Set-up-safely-SECONDARY-2

This article lists off the problems that can cause damage to your
equipment when filming.  One of them being that you need
to have your tripod stable, if the legs are close together
then the tripod may fall, so make sure they are as far
apart as possible.  Another issue is strong or loose legs
on the tripod which can also cause it to be unstable.  Then
it talks about different tripods, you may want to get a cheap
one, but in the end, you may want to get a more expensive one.
Moving on to the mounting part of the camera, if not screwed
on properly it will make the camera not go on the tripod
right.  You should also make sure to tighten your lock
on the tripod because if you walk away and it’s not secure,
the camera could fall forward onto the ground. Don’t forget
the space you film, there could be objects in the way,
or areas you shouldn’t put the tripod because it could be
a danger to others. Traffic can make you late, and or jiggle
around your equipment.  If you’re not careful. you can
hurt the cables by having pressure on them, so you should
tape them in place.  Lastly, make sure you have enough area
to set up your camera, and then protect your equipment by
having someone watching it at all times.  What I learned
in this article was the many ways you could have something
go wrong with video equipment.  This can help me by making
sure I follow these steps.

Mic Tricks for the Boom Operator, By: Hal Robertson, March 2014 issue

mic

For this article, it talks about how to operate a boom mic.
Basically what a boom mic is, is that you put a microphone
on a pole either handheld or setup somewhere, typically on
machinery. It’s attached with a shock mount to lower the
amount of noise that is heard when moving the microphone. Most
times there is someone hired to do the job of handling the
microphone, they are called the “boom operator.” In short,
you get a microphone, put it on a mount, and then on a pole,
and handle it around the area of people speaking.  At the end
of the article it just talked about the prices of these items,
I’m going to not include that part.  A way this article could
help is if we were to use a pole, but, we use a microphone
and attach it to the camera, so that’s unlikely.  I learned
how to handle a boom microphone.

Week 5 Progress

This week I wrote a script about what tempts us in life and what consequences follow when we fall to these desires to sin. One of the more mysterious/suspenseful pieces I have written. I will film it once I rewrite it, which will be soon. The story has a powerful message and will leave audiences wondering after they see it. In fact, I’m not sure if people will understand it the first time they see it. I will admit that there are a lot of religious themes that filter through this story. Reminds me a little bit of an M. Night Shyamalan film.

Week 4 Progress

This week I filmed a basketball game between the faculty and students here at Winthrop. Surprisingly that was the first full basketball game that I have ever filmed. I found it easier to film compared to other sporting events I’ve had to film. Focusing on the action was simple because all I had to do was watch where the ball went, opposed to filming a 1 by 3 inch black puck! It was fun to film and fun to watch.

MAC PRO

Apple Mac Pro Review

Adam Vesely
I learned that the Mac Pro is amazing because Its really light and its not that bulky and you could tale it home or any place you need because there so light and you don’t have to bring a big hard drive around to edit and you can use new cameras and Its even wireless.322-C5-Mac-ProSECONDARY

“Our test unit came nearly fully loaded with an 8-core Intel Xeon E5 processor, 64GB of memory, Dual AMD FirePro D700 graphics cards with 6GB of VRAM each and a 1TB PCIe-based SSD. If the previously listed specs weren’t enough to blow your mind, then imagine all of this computing power squeezed into a cylindrical aluminum enclosure that is 6.6-inches in diameter, 9.9-inches high and weighs 11lb.”322-C5-Mac-Pro-PRIMARY

Week 3 Progress

After watching the film El Mariachi, I learned a good bit about true gritty independent film making. Robert Rodriguez is a true master of his art. He managed to stretch his dollar extremely well, the stunts, the gun fights, the blood all done very well for a very low budget. This has taught me how to stretch my dollar when it comes to making films. I will use the knowledge that I gained from this film in future projects.

Week 1 Progress

Wrapping out of the first semester I have many projects that I helped film. The one I spent the most time doing would probably have to be the district promo video. I wasn’t sure how it was going to turn out in the end, but with the superintendent’s approval, I’m confident in the quality of the piece. It was a lot of fun to film and I am looking forward to more projects like it.

Week 6

As of yesterday Drew and I have finished a script that we are now going to shoot and edit. The story is about a crime that takes place and the three perspectives of the people involved. I will have it filmed by the end of this weekend and edited by the time grades close. With Drew and I both editing this it should be done rather quickly.
